The Teaching Plant

TEACHING PLANT (M. Sager, 2021. Acrylic on canvas, 100 x 150 cm)
TEACHING PLANT (M. Sager, 2021. Acrylic on canvas, 100 x 150 cm)

Plants can feed themselves. Humans need the help of plants because only they can process the nutrients of the soil into food. Humans have to compensate for their lack of natural intelligence with more complex structures. If plants were to economize as ‘intelligently’ as humans, humanity would depend on plants’ grace. The plants are unconditionally gracious, though. We know that plants can process information, communicate, and (re-) act. Do the plants know more? Why are they ready to plunge into ruin because of and with us? Is that how nature teaches us to love?

In this regard, two poems:

SOUL EARTH

Who mocks the soul but adores the sky,
adores the idolatry of a heavenly origin,
the megalomania of a cosmic meaning, and
the aloofness of a higher purpose.

Who adores the body but mocks the earth,
mocks the responsibility of an earthly connection,
the humility of a planetary nature, and
the groundedness of a profound liability.

Who adores the soul and the earth, indeed,
responds to the heavenly origin with an earthly connection,
humbles the cosmic meaning through a planetary nature, and
grounds her higher purpose on a profound liability.

PLANTS ARE STUPID

Plants are stupid.

They organize to turn earth into food,
provide to the needy without being asked.
Plants are stupid.

They share their parts and live on,
provide in abundance without demands.
Plants are stupid.

They cooperate for reproduction and growth,
provide of harvest without a price.
Plants are stupid.

The Flower

We only pay attention to the stage
Forgetting those who set the scene

We’re just looking where there’s fame
Forgetting those who protect the light

We only admire the booming ones
Forgetting those who bloom within

Break out

Painting BREAK OUT (M. Sager, 2021. Acrylic on wood panel, 80 x 80 cm)

We know that

Santa Claus is a fairytale,

and yet

we keep it alive.

We know that

many regulations and laws are ridiculous,

and yet

we follow them obediently.

We know that

corporate sustainability is an afterthought,

and yet

we don’t insist on keeping them accountable.

We know that

our identity is a product of socialization,

and yet

we believe that’s who we are.

And all because if we want to fit in, we have to bend. [see last painting]

DO WE HAVE THE COURAGE TO BREAK OUT?

BRICH AUS (M. Sager, 2021.

I love FOR you

I love FOR you.

To love is to be, do, and become that,
which is in the service of everyone.

Because …

… everyone is loved.
If my bravery can make you rise again,
Then I show you the ‘who’ you thought you couldn’t be.

… everyone does need love.
If my strength can heal your hurting wounds,
Then I make you believe the ‘what’ you believed you couldn’t do.

… everyone becomes love.
If my independence can lead your forgotten way,
Then I become the ‘where’ you feared you couldn’t come.

I love for you, everyone.

Nothing Has Changed (Or the Courage to Cease to Insist)

Nothing has changed

Some time ago we did insist on getting privileges
based on the race inherited from our parents

Nothing has changed

Nowadays still we insist on getting privileges
based on the wealth inherited from our parents

Nothing has changed

If in the future we will insist on getting privileges
due to the thinking inherited from our parents

Nothing has changed

Only if today we ceased to insist on getting privileges
through the courage independent of our parents

Something has changed

The world produces enough food to feed the planet’s 7 billion-plus people, so why are so many going hungry?* It’s mainly because most hungry people don’t have the resources to grow or buy food.

*1 in 3 people suffer from some form of malnutrition, which means they lack sufficient vitamins and minerals in their diet, which can lead to health issues such as stunted growth in children. Each year, poor nutrition kills 3.1 million children under the age of 5. Separation: The Mother of Frustration

mathias-sager-separation-maternal-alienation-frustration-poem

Like a nation‘s immigration
So its mothers’ alienation
Strategy for protection
Through separation
Frustration

Like a society’s identification
So its mothers’ justification
Need for appreciation
Through separation
Frustration

Like a family’s condition
So its mother’s assertion
Status for position
Through separation
Frustration

How do you define …

How do you define ‘right’
If you know only black and white
Asks a pen the other
When denied to draw together

How do you define ‘between’
If you know only up and down
Asks a pair of hands
When denied to come to terms

How do you define ‘family’
If you know only friend and enemy
Asks a father the mother
When denied to see his daughter

How do you define ‘collaborators’
If you know only in- and outsiders
Asks a colleague the other
When denied to add his matter

How do you define ‘life’
If you know only birth and death
Asks a thought the conscious
When denied to become perpetuous

To truly love a child

I have lost the child

Of a lonely man

Not in an accident nor war

A suffering psyche of scar

Has lost peace to seed

Fear’s possessive greed

Of a mother’s doubt what could be

If she were free

To truly love

I have won the children

Of all world’s men

Not by fighting back to win

A loving heart within

Has found peace to share

Forgiveness to take care

Of a father’s knowing what can be

Because he’s free

To truly love

Connected

The curtain of tears
is the entrance to the light
that connects us in eternity.

Verbunden
Der Vorhang aus Tränen
ist der Eingang zum Licht,
das uns in Ewigkeit verbindet.

Beyond happiness

I was looking for happiness and found meaning. When I accepted meaning, happiness became meaningless.

Traveling

Traveling

Visiting individual existences
Natural, awakening places
Kissing compassion and potential
Inspiring mysterious doors
Everywhere

Escaping forced appearances
Sterile, lulling spaces
Sucking possession and control
Depressing golden gates
Far away

Richer and richer

Ha ha, Gupta style (listen to the audio). A poem from my Indian friend Gupta san who still thinks he can better the world. Goooo, Gupta san!

Who has the money?
The rich who get richer and richer.
Who is financing new businesses?
The rich who get richer and richer.
What kind of businesses do they finance?
Profitable businesses that make the rich and richer.
That means businesses where the rich get more out of it than they put in?
Yes.
But who then puts in more than they get out of it,
so that the rich can get more out of it than they put in?
The planet and the poor.
That’s how the environment and society do pay the rich
who get richer and richer.
